Can you tell us about the baking action?
For the baking action “Bread sharing is caring” and sharing homemade “Danube sparrows” as a symbol of common European values and the necessity of joint activities for preserving peace in Europe, a working plan was developed by the presidents of all 20 clubs of pensioners of the Slivo Pole Municipality.
According to this plan, the international event GIVE А HAND OF FRIENDSHIP TO NATIONS ALONG THE DANUBE: CULTURAL TREASURES OF EUROPE – BULGARIA – GERMANY – ROMANIA was organized by the Union of Pensioners of Slivo Pole Municipality, in cooperation with the Institute for Virtual and Face-to-face Learning in Adult Education at Ulm University (ILEU) e.V., Ulm, Germany, the Danube Networkers for Europe (DANET) e.V., Germany, the Center for Third Age Education at the University of Ruse, Bulgaria, the NGO “Nothing is impossible – 3N”, Silistra, Bulgaria, Union of Writers, Giurgiu, and the Union of Pensioners, Calarasi, Romania.
The organizing committee prepared special Letters of Invitation and delivered them to more than 100 persons. The event team purchased gift wrappings, ribbons with the flag of the EU, paper flags of the EU, and paper flags of the European countries to wrap the baked sparrows. The Municipality transported women from Slivo Pole, Brashlen, Babovo, Borisovo, Yudelnik, Ryahovo, and Golyamo Vranovo to the venue of the baking action in Chereshovo.
The preparing and baking of Danube sparrows was planned and done by two groups of pensioners (15 and 14 persons each) in two days (10 and 12 November) because of the large number of sparrows needed for the invited guests.
Each of these two groups had a discussion on the goals and the expected results of the baking action, details of the preparing of the sparrows, and the different stages of that process. Every member of the groups had to go through all the stages.
A scenario of sharing the Danube sparrows was developed. It included:
- Opening ceremony (Mrs. Veska Uzunova, President of the Union of Pensioners, Slivo Pole Municipality; 2 folklore songs as a welcome performance by the choir of the Club of Pensioners in Brashlen)
- Presenting the guests by Mrs. V. Uzunova. Brief presentation of the project Bread Connects that involved many pensioners from the Municipality. Congratulation to Mr. Valentin Atanasov, the Mayor of the Slivo Pole Municipality, for his successful second term election.
- Congratulatory address to the pensioners and wishes for new successful projects by the Mayor of the Municipality.
- Presentation of the new bread action “Bread sharing is caring” and starting a new project of ILEU, Ulm, Baden-Wurttemberg Staatsministerium, Germany, by Mrs. Carmen Stadelhofer, President of ILEU and DANET.
- Sharing Danube sparrows with the guests, representatives of different organizations such as the Municipality, Local Government, mayor offices, production and agricultural companies, schools and kindergartens, centers and organizations from different Danube countries with the words “I give you my hand for friendship” by members of the clubs of pensioners. Every pensioner had to briefly present themselves, the organization they belonged to and their main area of interests as the grounds for future cooperation.
- A background slideshow demonstrating the preparing of the Danube Sparrows presented on a monitor.
- Visiting the exhibition and tasting some of the 23 bread products prepared by the club of pensioners.
- Closing the Cross-Border Meeting with wishes to the guests to share their experience during the baking action “Bread sharing is caring” and sharing homemade “Danube sparrows” with their workers, colleagues, and families.

What emotions did baking and sharing trigger in you and the recipients?
For the organizers: It was nice that so many people got interested in the activities of the pensioners and that so many pensioners took part in the organization of the event. The Baking action encouraged many people to participate in the new projects of ILEU and DANET. The event participants planned joint activities between companies, schools, various centres and pensioners’clubs.
For the quests: They found it interesting and unexpected that the municipality pensioners perform so many activities. The guests expressed their readiness to plan and take part in future joint activities as for example a theatre performance in two languages, life stories for the children and some other undertakings.
The media were interested in the origin of the idea about sharing baked sparrows since there are sparrow stories in Bulgaria as well. Mrs. Stadelhofer was interviewed with regard to future projects, activities and conditions for participation.
