- The first bakehouse in Böhringen was built in 1839. It was part of a building that also housed the washhouse and the prison.
- In 1958, the old bakehouse was demolished, and the current one with its two ovens was built.
- These two ovens were renovated in 2016 and lined with new bricks.
- The ovens are heated with wood, mainly with “Krähle” (bundles of brushwood).
- Presently, about 15 persons use the bakehouse.
- A men’s group is baking regularly.
- Every two weeks a local guesthouse bakes for their restaurant and for sale.
- Local clubs bake for their events and fests, e.g. the “Albverein“ when putting up the traditional maypole.
- Usually, the wood-burning ovens are used to bake “Genetztes” (wetted bread). This dough is placed into the oven by means of a “Schapf”, a kind of ladle, and its surface moistened to make the baked bread look glossy.
- Other favorites from the wood-burning ovens are “Laugenweckle” (pretzel-like buns).
