The Rasser family’s wood heated oven in Rauris, Austria runs at least four times a year. The baking house has been since 2001, providing the annual baking fest and the festivities around Holy Communion with bread. They bake sourdough bread, Kletzenbrot, wheat baked goods and from time to time a piece of roasted pork. The German South-western TV-channel SWR even shot a documentary about the baking festival in Rauris, featuring the Rassers’ oven as well.
The farmer and teacher Roswitha Huber developed a programme to prevent children from throwing away their lunch meal at school called “I make my lunch meal from scratch!”. This fostered the village’s interest in baking bread. Mr and Mrs Rasser subsequently started collecting rocks from the nearby river Rauriser Ache, eventually building their own stone oven. In 2009, under the guidance of Mrs Roswitha Huber, the first Rauris Baking Festival was held; a growing success!
