Bread connects – a cross-border festival in Antimovo, near Vidin, Bulgaria

Antimovo is a village in the municipality of Vidin, Bulgaria, near the Danube, but also close to the border of Romania and Serbia. The festival of St. George on 6th of May is celebrated as a traditional festival with music and dance and takes place on 5th and 6th of May each year. In addition, there was something new this year: a culinary festival in which groups from Bulgaria, Romania and Serbia were represented and in which bread played a major role.

Carmen Stadelhofer, the chairwoman of the education network Danube-Networkers and and Bertram Wegemer, Danube Networkers Ulm, had the opportunity to attend this festival on 5th of May 2019. The mayor of Vidin, Mr. Ognyan Tsenkov, opened it ceremonially with a short speech and with numerous bangs of firecrackers. In her speech, Carmen Stadelhofer introduced the Danube-Networkers and their goals. She delivered greetings of all who participate in the project “Bread connects”. In a tour, she admired the large variety of bread shapes at numerous stands as well as the rich selection of bread and other culinary specialties, which were lovingly presented by all participating Chitaliste-groups. The Danube-sparrow, which was sent in spring from Ulm to the Bulgarian partner groups, with the request to bake it as a sign of peace and pass it on, found itself on many of the beautiful decorated tables. Despite the heavy rainfall that affected the festival, many people spent hours celebrating, eating and chatting. At the end of the event there was a competition for one typical national dish each, prepared by a group from Bulgaria, Romania and Serbia. In the baking competition, a beautifully designed bread was awarded first prize by the jury.

The department head of Social Affairs of the city Vidin and the leaders of the Chitaliste-Clubs in the district of Vidin invited the guests to this event to introduce the local activities and to talk about future cooperation. This intention was also welcomed by the mayor of Vidin and Emilia Lissichkova from the Agora-platform Bulgaria, who had made the contact. In the evening first ideas for further cooperation were exchanged. The traditional Bulgarian cuisine, Bulgarian pastries and cultivating traditions play a major role in such festivities in Bulgaria. On the one hand, the delegation from Ulm was able to get a direct impression of local traditions and, on the other hand, to take advantage of the opportunity to exchange and network.

Brot verbindet- ein grenzübergreifendes Fest in Antimovo, in der Nähe von Vidin, Bulgarien

Antimovo ist ein Dorf in der Gemeinde Vidin, Bulgarien, in der Nähe der Donau, aber auch in der Nähe zu der Grenze nach Rumänien bzw. Serbien. Zum Fest des heiligen Georg am 6. Mai findet jährlich am 5. und 6. Juni ein Traditionsfest mit Musik und Tanz statt. Dieses Jahr gab es zusätzlich etwas Neues: ein kulinarisches Fest, bei dem Gruppen aus Bulgarien, Rumänien und Serbien vertreten waren und bei dem Brot eine große Rolle spielte.

Carmen Stadelhofer, die Vorsitzende des Bildungsnetzwerks Danube-Networkers, hatte am 5.6. 2019 die Möglichkeit, zusammen mit Bertram Wegemer, Danube-Networkers Ulm, bei diesem Fest beizuwohnen. Es wurde mit einer kurzen Rede des Bürgermeisters von Vidin, Herr Ognyan Tsenkov, und mit zahlreichen Böllerschüssen feierlich eröffnet. In ihrer Rede stellte Carmen Stadelhofer die Danube-Networkers und ihre Ziele vor. Sie überbrachte die Grüße aller, die am Projekt „Bread connects“ teilnehmen. In einem Rundgang bestaunte sie an zahlreichen Ständen die große Vielfalt an Brotgebilden sowie die reichhaltige Auswahl an Brot- und anderen Esswaren, die von allen beteiligten Chitaliste- Gruppen sehr liebevoll präsentiert wurden. Der Donauspatz, der im Frühjahr von Ulm an die bulgarischen Partnergruppen ausgesandt wurde, mit der Bitte, ihn als Zeichen des Friedens zu backen und weiterzureichen, fand sich auf vielen der schön dekorierten Tische. Trotz starken Regens, der das Fest sehr beeinträchtigte, haben viele Menschen über Stunden miteinander gefeiert, gegessen und sich ausgetauscht. Am Ende der Veranstaltung gab es eine Auslobung von je einem typischen Nationalgericht, das jeweils von einer Gruppe aus Bulgarien, Rumänien und Serbien angefertigt wurde. Bei dem Backwettbewerb erhielt ein wunderschön gestaltetes Brot von der Jury den ersten Preis

Die Sozialdezernentin der Stadt Vidin und die Verantwortlichen für die Chitaliste-Clubs im Distrikt Vidin hatte die Gäste zu diesem Fest eingeladen, um die Aktivitäten vor Ort vorzustellen und über zukünftige Zusammenarbeit zu sprechen. Diese Absicht begrüßten auch der Bürgermeister von Vidin und Emilia Lissichkova von der Agora-Plattform Bulgarien, die den Kontakt hergestellt hatte. Am Abend wurden erste Ideen zur weiteren Zusammenarbeit ausgetauscht. Die traditionelle bulgarische Küche, bulgarisches Gebäck und das Pflegen von Traditionen spielen in Bulgarien bei solchen Festivitäten eine große Rolle. Die Ulmer Delegation konnte somit zum einen einen direkten Eindruck der Traditionen vor Ort erhalten, zum anderen die Gelegenheit zum Austausch und Netzwerken nutzen.
