On World Food Day, 16th October 2017, an event on the subject “Bread connects” took place at the church-related educational institution House of Encounter together with the Danube-Networkers. In the morning, 55 pupils, two teachers, the headmaster of Spitalhofschule Ulm and 12 Danube-Networkers worked together in different working groups on the subject Bread connects with the aspects nutritional basis, society, sharing and responsibility for others.
In the group ‘Contemporary Witnesses’, Elsa and Franz who had fled with their families after WW2 from Backa Palanka (Serbia) and Mariakemend (Hungary) told about their hunger and the meaning of bread in the misery for many people during war and post-war times. Reverend Michael Hauser and representatives of the Foodsharing movement explained why it is important to not throw away unneeded food but to share it to the benefit of all. One group of pupils, together with Reverend Richter-Hoffmann, concentrated on the situation of Sinti and Roma in Southeast Europe and the importance of the reduction of prejudices and the acceptance of Sinti in all national societies on an equal footing. Another group learnt how to bake bread which was shared with everyone later and they worked with the Danube game to find where the other partners of the project live. The Bread Museum Ulm was visited by another group that learnt about the history of bread in different cultures. In the late morning, the pupils presented the results of their working groups, the photo group showed the pictures of the action and self-made buns were shared under the motto Give a sign of friendship! An interesting morning for everyone.
